Diva Through the Looking Glass / Lemon Frame Gallery03/06/2022 to - 10/07/2022 The first solo exhibition in Israel of French feminist artist Baptiste Leonne will open at Lemon Frame Gallery in Tel Aviv, between Friday June 3nd and July 10th 2022. The exhibition 'Diva Through the Looking Glass' will feature works that combine drawing, photography and painting on mirrors. Leonne's works echo notions of femininity and identity. The act of looking in the mirror is strongly associated with women, especially historically. Indeed, Leonne highlights femininity and feminism as a distinct motif in the series. Using his brush and camera lens, he successfully captures the feminine beauty in all its intensity, turning any personal individual into a universal character. In his view, the works reflect an attempt to bring back to the cynical world all the poetry that emanates from the souls of women. The play of light and shades in each piece is reminiscent of a nostalgic aesthetic from another era. Ancient goddesses and mythological statues such as the Venus de Milo statue are a source of inspiration for him, representing eternal feminine power and at the same time symbolizing the beauty of imperfection. His works make reference to the paintings of Gustav Klimt, who also "dressed" his female characters with beautiful and colorful adornments and managed to immortalize the feminine beauty. The current exhibition invites us to examine Leonne's "Divas" as a collective, an imaginary tribe of women who transcend space and time. They seem to be in a similar yet different world – just within our reach. The reflection motif presented throughout the series glances back at us, showing us not only our own self-image but the way others see us. Baptiste Leonne is an artist of intermediate states: between fantasy and reality, between image and reflection, between painting and photography. In the ongoing, monumental series Diva, this tension is expressed in full force. Leonne's unique creative process always begins with a painting on a mirror: he draws over the reflection of figures standing in front of the mirror and "dresses" them with expressive brushstrokes. But only in the next stage does the magic begin, through the camera lens and the resulting reflections. In his canvas paintings, Leonne includes photography, but changes the order of the creative process, thereby re-examining the boundaries between the mediums. Hence, both types of work move in a closed circle between mirror, painting and photography. While the paintings instill a sense of intimacy with the artist, the framing of the photograph behind the glass creates a sense of distance, bringing us back through the glass reflection to the original perception of the mirror. About Baptiste Leonne: Leonne is a French self-taught artist based in the city of Rouen in the north of France. He began his career as a musician, and during his concert tours he found inspiration for his first photographs and started working as an eclectic interdisciplinary artist, nearly a decade ago. In recent years, he has developed his own unique technique, which combines painting and photography, in an attempt to experience and explore photography as a medium.
