Marcel Sagi was born in Tunis. There he went through World War II and the independence of Tunisia. He was educated in a French school called "Emil Luba" until the age of Bar Mitzvah. In 1956 he immigrated to Israel with his family, to Moshav Nir Yaffe. When he arrived in Israel, he was transferred with the help of "Aliyat Hanoar" to an agricultural boarding school in Hadera. There he studied Hebrew and graduated with honors. He enlisted in the army, where he served in the Nahal for two and a half years. He was then admitted to the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem, and studied applied graphics for four years. For a living he worked in archeological paintings in various expeditions. Marcel is a man with an artistic imagination. Hates technologies and innovations, believes only in brush and paint, which is very evident in his works. He has presented both solo and joint exhibitions. After a break of several years in which he wrote and painted children's books, he returned to painting on canvas. This time he chose a somewhat unusual subject and it is "the tombs of the sages of antiquity," as they were originally buried hundreds of years ago. From the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron, the tomb of the fathers and mothers to the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav in Uman, Ukraine. His preoccupation with archeological paintings connected him to this series of paintings and all the research works on which he was based opened up a deeper and more interesting understanding of the form of burial in Israel and abroad (and in the Diaspora). He sees his choice to paint the tombs throughout Jewish history as a mission of great importance, especially in light of the fact that only a few artists have dealt with this issue before him. His unique and naive painting style is evident in this series. The photos are displayed here in random order, with the name of the deceased, his place of birth and place of burial.
