On Thursday 2.5, the new solo exhibition of Shivetz Cohen / Waimea will open at the P8 Gallery. This is Cohen's first solo exhibition in Israel since the exhibition "The Concrete Garden" (2012), in which he exhibited a series of large, dense and intensive graphite drawings, in a technique identified with the stamping on various concrete surfaces. In contrast to past exhibitions composed of works of drawing, sculpture and installation, whose touch or body presence are clearly visible, the center of the exhibition "Weimah" features black and white photographs digitally processed. In this exhibition, Cohen stretches the boundaries of drawing. The dense graphic drawings are replaced by stormy surfing photographs, which carry a remarkable recording quality and embody the movement of the human body. In fact, these are digital drawings. The photographs, which were collected from a reservoir of images, first thought of their record quality and the possibility of opening it, were all taken from the surfer's point of view after the wave broke from the water to the shore. The waves of the waves, the drift of water to the shore, the foam of broken waves and the splashing of water, all white on top of the sea black, reminiscent of graphite drawings in their texture. This quality is sharpened by how the images are processed. Cohen cleans the photographs, removes excess information from them, highlights certain elements and erases others, sharpens the contrasts between black and white, and creates digital drawings that resemble explosions.

The record of the wave's rise and its explosion to thousands of flakes is reminiscent of the explosions in the series "Andrea" (2009), in which the paper served as a target for sending explosive charges mixed with graphite chips and paint. The splashes of paint around the hole torn in the paper, which look like flies swarming around a gaping wound, have created a violent and uncontrollable drawing of action. The image of the explosion, he says, has been accompanied by a signal ever since. In this series, which deals with the official interpretation of the freezing of the moment of explosion, the gaze is directed at one of the explosions created by nature, and the freezing of the surfer's movement and his gaze towards the shore. The attempt to capture body movement and freezing echoes years of creation that has a prominent physical element. The current series of works is a natural continuation of a different technique for the graphite sketches he made while riding on rollerblades, or for a sculpture whose son simulates a skateboard. Beyond all, however, the new series of works contains deep emotions: masculine heroism of continuous physical effort, romance of human posture against the elements, especially loneliness and great passion. None of the works have a beach - all the beaches have been erased in the process of processing the picture - and the freezing of the moment of rising and then the explosion claims the works with sexual energy bursting. The name of the series, heard by a foreign ear like a mysterious woman, hints at another object of desire: the Bay of Weyme, a mythical surfing site in Hawaii, where Cohen had never visited.
