Already as you descend to Naftali Solomon's atelier, you feel the fragrance of color, material and the special atmosphere surrounding the house, the home where his daughter Nitza and her husband live and preserve their heritage. The great knowledge, the excitement of revealing information about his uniqueness, his greatness, his professionalism and his love for creativity are expressed in every sentence that you hear from Nitza. Blessed is the artist who perpetuates respect and continues without revealing to an art-loving audience even after the death of the artist.
In a wonderful film, Mira Bauer documents a moving encounter with painter Naftali Solomon at the age of 90. Naftali reveals to us in the studio while working on a new painting, a selection of his works in the styles of the years. Salomon also tells us about some of his experiences as an Israeli painter over the years, a record of his art and his learned statements about what art is.
He says that each artist has a spiritual baggage that he expresses in his work and develops techniques that are unique to him. He describes the confrontation between the artist and the canvas and the long process until he decides to complete the piece which takes time and never ends. Until the moment the work is acquired and from that time the artist has no more to say. The work is finished. The art world depends on the art market relevant to that period, and there is no right to exist for an artist who does not take into account the consumer market of art.
The classical music accompanied his work and is evident in the tranquility of the landscapes, in the love of the textures of the land of Israel, its skies, its villages and the people, the characters, which are integrated into the scene it documents. Naftali's ambition was to be an artist who, when he sees his work immediately, will say with certainty that this is an Israeli landscape! Nature is so rooted in his memory that he was able to draw from memory as well. One of the critics of art told him that the precise drawings of good figures from all his colorful paintings, and this put him in the ambition to invest more in the technique of applying the color, the composition and the completeness of light in the special nature of the Land of Israel.
Naftali came from a believing religious family, grandson of Yoel Moshe Salomon, one of the founders of Petach Tikvah. He believes in human beings for good and for bad, and enjoys documenting Bible stories from childhood memories.
Naftali is not a political person and yet expresses the incessant quarrel that leads to wars in his work in which roosters express mutual anger.
In this exhibition, paintings were chosen that reflect his work over the years, a selection of pictures that are beloved by his family, and as Naftali told them, art is a market and therefore it is important that more people be exposed to the works and purchase them. Hundreds of works are waiting for you to watch, pure enjoyment of art that deserves to be displayed in every space where people meet: home, office, galleries and businesses.
The Petach Tikva Artists Association is proud to present in the Blue Bird Gallery, the art of a founding member of the family, who never lived in the city, but his creative heritage pervades every work he creates.
