Assaf Shani | You Are Here / Montefiore Gallery03/08/2017 to - 25/08/2017At first glance, Assaf Shani's landscape paintings are pleasant to look at. The seemingly familiar, innocent Land-of-Israel scenery: fields, hills, houses and trees. Upon further observation, questions begin to arise as to the nature of these views. Shani paints from a distance, documenting. He depicts landscapes void of human life, barren and lifeless. What are these silent places? Are they places of hiding? An escape from the cacophony of daily life? There seems to be something too quiet about them. This silent place harbors a storm. The silence, depicted in gentle brush strokes from the depths of his being, is not innocent. It hides a nostalgic statement of the innocent that once was, a statement pertaining to the state of the individual who is here – referencing the past, innocence, primordiality. The changes that overtake the scenery are akin to the changes experienced by man: one who faces a complex contemporary reality, brimming with fights for survival; one who feels that, at the end of the day, he alone faces the battle and seeks out a place of solace. Yet despite the barren ground there is bloom, plants, a blossoming green tree, a flowery field; simultaneously derelict and beautiful. A color scheme of yellow-brown arid land scorched by the Israeli sun, complimented by towering cypresses and cacti – a prime characteristic of Israeli scenery. Assaf Shani is a painter and an architect. His profession manifests in attention to detail, precise choice of color and carefully planned brush strokes. The end result is characteristically realistic, yet personalized and focused. Galit Hazelkorn, Curator.
