From Inclusion to Partnership / The Gallery for Social Art23/03/2017 to - 23/06/2017From Inclusion to Partnership Curators: Daphna Yalon | Abigail Hirsch March 2017
We have a dream that one day people with disabilities and those without disabilities will be respected as equals.
The exhibition ‘From Inclusion to Partnership’ consists of nine projects by artists from Britain, Germany, Vietnam, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Canada and Israel. Artists with disabilities and artists without disabilities joined together to create collaborative works as part of projects that were derived from *artist in residence, personal initiatives, and in response to the ‘call out’ for an exhibition that sought to challenge artists on the issue of equal creative collaboration devoid of hierarchies.
The concept of ‘inclusion’ is based on the perception that there is one population that contains another population that is excluded. The concept of the **Institute of Education for Sustainability is based on the belief that we are all partners in the society, our roles are to build it together, and everyone has a part and a responsibility in shaping and leading.
Therefore, it is necessary to shift from the inclusion approach to the concept of partnership. A partnership that begins in teams where the person with disability acts as an essential and leading part in every team. The aim of the exhibition is to develop and promote the idea of partnership between artists and to challenge the public's perception of artists with disabilities. This is out of desire to raise awareness of equality within the artists’ community and cultural institutions.
The exhibition documents creative and Interpersonal discourse between artists with disabilities and artists without disabilities. This is through seeing the artist and his work as a tool for social change and healing. A sense of movement flows throughout the collection of verbal and nonverbal output which is displayed in the exhibition. The motivation and perhaps also the pleasure of the collaborators is shown in the creative process. The artists who were moved to respond to one another, also examine the personal movement that distinguishes them. Above all this there were the questions that the pair of artists, Davide De Lillis and Julia Metzger-Traber, well-articulated: * Artist in Residence – is a program in which artists arrive at an organization or project for a limited period of time in which they are involved in the creative process. What happens during the period of stay is the result of a common agreement between the artist and the organization providing the residency. The product can be: creation, research, exhibition, installation, performance and more.
** The Institute for Sustainability Education - at the David Yellin Academic College of Education has embarked on a challenge in a wide range of activities in order to promote environmental literacy and social action; development of initiative, ability to give and involvement in the community. In the spirit of this effort, the partners in the Institute developed a model for action for practical change in the education system “From a school which exists to a school which uphold".
