The Double Mirror: Artist Paint Artists' Portraits / Rosenthalis House22/12/2016 to - 18/03/2017The Double Mirror: Artist Paint Artists' Portraits By Irit Levin The exhibition is a visual result of an artistic co-operation between collegial artists, ensuing documentation, and a dialog and reciprocal inquiry and observation. The portraits pertain to a multi-faceted interchange between veterans and young artists, teachers and apprentices. Thus, the viewer may be exposed to the familiar, literary, and cultural milieu of the involved artists. Paintings Some portraits are painted in oil and acrylic on canvas in accordance with photographs by the artists themselves, as these capture a glance, wrinkles, facial particularities, personal impressions of the active painter by the persona depicted. Other works are accomplished facing the model and follow the more conventional and classic processes of the history of portraiture, usually based on contemplation, study, and inquiry of the seen. Works derive from a realistic and concrete approach as well as from inspiration and memory. Drawings At times the drawing is done by: a quick and accurate hand gesture; an expressive and vital line; a studious observation; or a refined and subdued approach. Photographs The photographs in the exhibition expose various aspects: a presentation of the artists in their own studio while active; a conceptual activity of the artists within local landscape; focusing on decoding the singularity of facial traits. Sculptures The sculptured images form part of wider artistic project, a "library" of artists' heads. These images stem from the concrete act of sculpting and the dialog between the artist and the model. The present exhibition does not aim to exhaust the subject of artists depicting artists/ models but we hope it will trigger the viewer's imagination and knowledge.
