(Re)collection / The Jerusalem Artists Houseטלפון - 02-6253653 14/02/2009 to - 21/03/2009 Arturas Valiauga (B.1967), Ugnius Gelguda and (B.1977), Gintautas Trimakas (B.1958) curator: Agnė Narušytė The exhibition of contemporary Lithuanian photography, installation and video examines the constructive effects and perceptual mechanisms of memory. Much has been said about memory as a political tool, yet it is also an active agent of the present shaping it at this moment life is becoming memory as we live it, constantly (re)collecting our perceptions, experiences and insights and thus regaining control of ourselves. This process is not so much guided by conscious strategies but rather by emotion, intuition, chance, political context, the sense of national identity and the medium. Photographs as a means to store memory are worryingly random and what they preserve might not coincide with what we really experience even if they have been faithful companions to our daily activities. Or, conversely, life itself can be modelled according to our visual memory and given a new meaning when photographed. And when advancement in technology transforms the means of encoding memory, the life of an entire generation plunges into the irretrievable past. Thus, an exhibition about memory is, inevitably, an investigation of constructive capabilities and human relevance of photography, which eventually replaces what we call life. Discussion with the participants and the curator will take place before the opening at 11:30 am location - The Jerusalem Artists House Time - 14/02/2009 to - 21/03/2009 |
